Up North Season
14 June 2023
Our 'Up North' season begins this month and plays until July, as every two weeks we showcase a different film set in and around the North of England. The first film selected, based on the novel of the same name stars Colin Firth & Kenneth Branagh in A Month In The Country. A classic drama wherein a destitute WWI veteran is hired to help carry out restoration work on a medieval mural in a rural Yorkshire church. While living in the quiet village, he forms a close friendship with an archaeologist and begins to come to terms with his trauma.
The second film in our season will be the 2016 verison of Swallows and Amazons. Four children dream of escaping the tedium of a summer holiday with their mother. When finally given permission to camp on their own on an island in the middle of a vast lake in the Lake District, they are overjoyed, but when they get there they discover they may not be alone. The battle for ownership of a lonely island teaches them the skills of survival, the value of friendship and the importance of holding your nerve. Based on the novel by Arthur Ransome.
Following this our programme will also include the iconic Brassed Off, Calender Girls & the dark comedy Sightseers from Director Ben Wheatley.
